Artist & Tutor

Gill Graduated in 1989 with a BA(Hons) in Constructed Textiles with Photography from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. She earned a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Art & Design from Strathclyde University, Glasgow in 1993.

Gill worked teaching art and design, delivering workshops in Fife, Lanarkshire and Argyll and Bute before settling in Glasgow. Having swapped the countryside for the city, Gill’s focus and appreciation of rural life and natures landscape have become a growing  focus in her work.

In 2024 Gill left teaching to focus full-time on her own artwork, setting up a studio attached to her home.

Artist’s Statement

Having lived most of my younger life in the countryside or by the sea, these continue to be my restful, calming and happy places. They are a constant and comforting reminder that no matter what life brings, the sun will rise tomorrow, and spring will return each year, and the birds will sing at the break of dawn. These are the themes that inform my work.

Mixed Media Pieces

In my mixed-media landscapes, it is the space and solitude of the countryside which I aim to evoke; an emptiness where only the wind, grasses and streams provide the soundtrack, inviting the viewer to relax into that sense of place.

My focus is the creation of  stillness, void of the presence of man and animals, where the viewer can contemplate their place and position  in the context of the natural world.

I am interested in the juxtaposition of the wildness of the landscape and the will of man to impose his footprint  through farming and through even the need to measure and classify through ordinance survey maps – all of which provide me with marks, lines and shapes as inspirations.

I draw from my  background in tapestry and papermaking  to source  fabrics I use to explore different surface textures. To add ornamentation and a sense of the precious I incorporate beading and metallics to pieces as I celebrate and evoke  the delicate beauty of nature and its balance. Threads and needles  are used as drawing tools and hark back to my days of warp and weft at the tapestry loom which serve  as a metaphor for the emotional ties I have with the landscape.

Lino Prints

In contrast to the emptiness of the mixed media landscapes, I use printmaking as a vehicle to show the detail within these places as well as the natural world I observe as a city dweller. The joy that I glean from seasonal flowers, courting birds and the urban foxes of the garden brings me is reoccurring theme in these pieces

The precision and process of printmaking demands a calm and steady hand and is a highly mindful process allowing me to reflect at length on the wonder of nature – even in the city!
